Book manuscript
Bram is currently authoring Let the Triumphs Be Shown: Dido and Aeneas, Baroque Music, and Learning to Conduct It, a book teaching young conductors how to begin learning Baroque performance practice by using Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas as a guide. The book is replete with references to authorities ancient and modern, and reflects Bram’s considerable experience coaching student, professional, and amateur performers alike in Baroque practice. Bram expects the book to be completed by 2023. Please check back for further developments!
Papers given
Bram has presented the following papers:
- “Privilege in the House of Mirrors: What you can do to shatter structural barriers in classical music” — selected as the closing lecture of the Midwest Graduate Music Consortium in April 2021, in response to an international call for student papers. The paper drew on Bram’s time directing his post-classical vocal ensemble, Consort, in their effort to make classical music normal in Kansas City, mo.
- “Estimable Rhetoric: How one cross-disciplinary approach can revolutionize music performance” — This paper was awarded the second-place prize in the arts at Ohio State’s Edward F. Hayes Graduate Research Forum in April 2021. The paper and the accompanying lecture were on musical rhetoric, the Baroque set of techniques for creating and communicating emotion in music.
